5w40 ? -5w refers to fluidity when cold (w = winter grade). The lower the number, the more fluid the oil at low temperatures, making cold starts easier. -40 refers to fluidity when hot. The higher the number, the more viscous the oil at high temperatures and the better it protects when hot (motorway).

The classifications API and ACEA (formerly CCMC) give the level of performance of the oil.

- API : the American standards

API 'S' : petrol engine (SF lower quality than SG lower than SH lower than SJ. API 'C' : diesel (CD lower than CF).

- ACEA : the European standards. A : petrol engine (A2 lower than A3). B : diesel engine (B2 lower than B3). A1, B1 => energy saving.
